Creating an Ownership Culture

In our most recent blog post, we discussed how to create a culture of ownership in the workplace, that is, getting more buy-in, personal investment, and follow-through from employees.

The benefits of ownership are clear: employees who feel that they have more autonomy—the freedom to make decisions about what they can work on and when—are more innovative, satisfied, confident, and driven. Combine this feeling with a sense of purpose, and team members feel a greater motivation to do more because they understand how what they’re doing contributes to the company mission.

Essentially, what we’re talking about is empowering employees to take charge and be leaders in their own way. To help you build a culture of ownership, autonomy, and empowerment, here are 3 resources we hope will inspire you, help you ask better questions, and look at new ways to motivate your people.

In this in-depth article from Harvard Business Review, researchers Allan Lee, Sara Willis, and Amy Wei Tian describe why some motivation tactics succeed and others sink. They also elucidate important cross-cultural challenges, particularly between East Asian and Western workplace cultures.

RSA animation brings a talk by Daniel Pink—author of the bestselling business book Drive—to life, describing a surprising paradox of human motivation, and how purpose and autonomy—not money—inspire people and organizations to be more innovative, productive, and do more for the world we live in,

Leadership consultant and speaker Simon Sinek is all about the “Why.” Once we find our “why,” we can find our purpose, develop into more effective leaders, and even transform cultures. Check out his book Start with Why to dig deeper into finding greater fulfillment for yourself, and how to inspire others to do the same.

We hope you find these resources useful as you work to instill a greater sense of buy-in and ownership in your teams and organization.
